I’ll be honest, I didn’t think there was any way the hermit crabs we bought the kids back in August were going to live to see Labor Day.
Much to my surprise, they both made it into November, before Tuesday (that was his name: Tuesday. It was originally Yoda, but Parker got bored with that and decided to go with a day of the week) died last Tuesday.
On Saturday I surprised the kids with a replacement hermit crab, and unlike the au natural crabs they had before, this guy had a soccer ball painted on his back. I told Parker he should name him after a soccer player: Josy Altidore, Messi, Landon Donovan, Drogba. Suddenly his eyes lit up.
“I got it,” he said, “Kaka!”
And so we now have a hermit crab named after a Brazilian midfielder who plays for Real Madrid.
Or a bowel movement.
