Monday Soup

+ I’m gonna be honest, I don’t get this Occupy Wall Street thing even a little bit. Read a quote this weekend where someone called it the most important protest of the past 50 years. Really?

Maybe it’s the media’s fault, but all I can think about when I see the protests is that these are a bunch of people who’d rather sit around and make trouble than work hard. I know that’s not the case, though, and as this Fast Company infographic shows, a lot of the OWS stereotypes aren’t legit.

(Personally, I’m much more concerned with my own Occupy movement every morning on the way to work when a bunch of cars occupy the road I’m trying to drive on.)

+ All  you acoustic guitar players out there, this is the best deal on strings I’ve seen in a while. Amazon has a 3-pack of my favorite strings, D’addario’s Light gauge EJ16 for just $13.99. And if you’re an Amazon Prime member like I am, the 2-Day shipping is free. (all Amazon links in this post are affiliate links)

+ Living in Pennsylvania while this Penn State scandal unfolds has been strange. Everybody is talking about it, especially the loyal Penn State Alums and fans who have always had the University on a pedestal.

Most of them have already realized that the harm to the school’s legacy (and Joe Paterno’s legacy) is trivial compared to the crimes committed against the victims, but I’ve had a couple conversations with folks who didn’t get it yet.

+ Really enjoying Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port. I’m only a few chapters in so I can’t speak to the whole book, but what I’ve found so far is practical, actionable advice on setting up your business to reach the clients you want to work with in ways that you will help you both win. Excited to dig into it more.

+ I did two coaching chats with the Killer Tribes Blogger Community on Saturday that went really well. We used Google Plus hangouts to do the video chats and I was very impressed with how well it worked. This is a great week to jump on board the community because we’ve got a project launching next week that’s going to provide community members with objective, anonymous feedback on their blogs.

Ever wish you could receive honest feedback on what’s working and what’s not working with your blog? Sign up for the Community this week and you’ll get your chance.

+ Howard Beck has a great breakdown of the NBA’s proposed deal in the NY Times. What do I think? Two things:

1. I HATE David Stern’s “take this deal NOW or you’ll be forced to take a worse deal later” ultimatum. Is it a good negotiating ploy? Maybe. But to me it just adds to the childish atmosphere that has been prevalent throughout these negotiations. Why not just put the deal out there and let them vote? Instead you’re forcing the players into a corner, and it seems to me it raises the chances of them rejecting the deal just to spite your antics.

2. I think the players should take the deal (maybe with a few tweaks). Their careers have a shorter shelf life than the owners’ careers and one can argue that they are already overpaid in the grand scheme of things. No one likes to have the RESET button hit on something when it’s been going great for them, but that’s what needs to happen here. Players: take the deal and get back to workplay.

+ Anyone in the San Francisco area interested in having me out as a speaker? If so, shoot an email to booking@bryanallain.com. I’m really hoping to get out to the area in 2012 so I’d be very interested in finding a way to make it work. (more info at my speaking page)

What about you, what’s in your Monday Soup today?
