one of the many reasons i love “LOST”
this idea has been bouncing around in my head for a few days, and i know it won’t make much sense when i try and organize it into sentences, but here goes.
i think one of the reasons that i like LOST is because the creators of the show are putting so much thought, creativity, and effort into it that it reminds me of God. Like when you find out what exactly the monster is, and then you go back and look at the first ten minutes of the Pilot Episode and see the monster flash onto the screen, and you think “wow, that’s cool that they knew what they were doing in the beginning”. or the fact that they work on storylines for the whole season beforehand and then carefully craft each episode to slowly tell each plot twist with careful details. With each new detail and revelation, we better appreciate what they’re doing with the characters and plot and we feel like we are getting closer to understanding the whole story.
Now here’s how i relate this to God. As we as humans progress through time, we are becoming smarter and understanding more about the earth God has created. Just like each LOST episode builds upon all the other that came before it, each generation of folks builds upon the inventions and advances of the previous ones. Everything is advancing: our medicines, how we understand our bodies, our environment, and how we go about preserving it. First we discovered what electricity was, then we were able to harness it, study it, and now it has helped us unlock more mysteries and share information over an internet that puts anything you ever wanted to know right at your fingertips! (thanks Al Gore!).
The thing is, there will always be more to know. Because God is infinitely more complex and intelligent than we can be. That is why each year there are new discoveries and new inventions. Whether it be something as small as quarks or something as big as the universe, we will never be able to fully mine the depths of what is there. It’s almost like that with the show LOST too. We can all guess at where the writers are going based on the clues they give us, but we will never know. Not until they tell us anyway. The further we progress into the series, the more we will discover, and in the end we will (hopefully) finally understand everything and feel that closure.
I believe the same is true for us as humans. The further we progress into history, the more we will understand the complex world that God has placed us in. We will get smarter because collectively we will continue to build upon what the generation before us has done. But it won’t be until the end of time that we will fully understand things. Or maybe we never will, after all, full knowledge is not really the point of our existence. And as each new plot revelation in LOST makes me shake my head and say “wow”, so too should each new discovery in the world we live in. We should heap praise on God for his creation as effusively as we do the writers of this incredibly well-done show.
A show like LOST satisfies me because i know that there is more that i don’t know. I don’t have everything figured out, and it keeps me watching. And so it is here on earth. There is so much we don’t know. And it is comforting. Comforting to know that like the writers of LOST, God has a much bigger plan in place. And that it’s ok that i don’t have all the answers, because someone does. The creator does. And that’s a good thing because frankly, i don’t want to have all the answers.
It’s much more fun to anticipate what the next episode in life will bring.
