Migraines

I’ve been getting migraines since I was about 5 years old. When I was younger they were much more debilitating than they are now. I used to get them for 1-3 days at a time, and I’d puke a alot and basically have to stay in bed in the dark until they went away. (Thanks mom, for taking care of me back then!)
Once I got into my twenties I learned how to manage them better. When I feel one coming on I can usually take 2-3 advil and keep it at bay throughout the day. It might not go away, but it won’t get much worse. Usually the only thing that will make it go away is a good night sleep (as long as I take advil before bed).
About 5 years ago I tried a drug made by Astra-Zeneca for migraines called Zomig. For me it’s been a lifesaver. It’s a pill I take when my headache has escalated to the point where I can’t really function anymore. I’ve taken it about 20-25 times over the past 5 years, and every time it has COMPLETELY rid me of the headache. It’s amazing.
Now, it doesn’t work for everyone (my sister gets migraines and it did nothing for her), but if you get migraines, I suggest giving it a try. It comes in 2.5 mg or 5.0mg doses, and for me, the 2.5mg dose is enough. Even with insurance, it comes out to about $3 a dose for me, so it’s not cheap. But that’s why I only use it when I’ve got a bad one.
Anyone else out there struggle with migraines? Do you have tried and true methods that help you cope? Do you have a prescription drug that works for you? I’d love to know…
there are days when putting my kids to bed immediately soothes my migrane!
relpax!!!
I tried Immitrex once, but it turned my normal migraine into a “complicated migraine” which landed me in the ICU with stroke-like symptoms. Yeah, scary. BUT, I’ve only had TWO migraines since then, and I just cram the Advil, shut the lights, and veg/sleep for a day. I’m sorry you get migraines so often, but glad there was a remedy for you.
I’ve heard that if you drink a can of COKE or PEPSI that the caffeine helps. Have you heard that? Sounds crazy, but I tried it once, seems like it helped…
Have a great day.
SHeri,
the caffeine definitely helps. As long as it’s not after dinner, I’ll usually chase the advil with a coffee or Coke and it can help. I think it helps to relieve the pressure of the swollen blood vessels on the brain, or whatever is happening behind my eyes that makes me want to sleep in a cold, dark, cave.
