Praying for The Democrats

I just heard today that my boy Donald Miller accepted an invitation to give the invocation at the Democratic National Convention on Monday!

Whatever your party affiliation, you’ve got to admit it’s a pretty cool honor.

I sent him my congrats, and found out it should go down between 10:30pm and 11:00pm EST time (between 8:30 and 9 in live in Denver). Pretty sure CNN is covering the thing from 6pm to Midnight every night, so set your DVRs to record.

When asked about his prayer this morning, Don had this to say:

I’ve not written the prayer yet, but I really wanted to hone in on the theme of unity, even unity between Republicans and Democrats. In the convention, as we highlight our differences that we wouldn’t forget that we’re unified, we have more in common than we don’t. That’s the focus of the prayer.

Personally, I think he should just wing it. That would be fun, wouldn’t it? I’m sure Barry wouldn’t mind.

You can read more of Don’s thought on why he’s a democrat, and why he’ll probably vote for Obama here.

I have no idea who I’m voting for, but I’m pretty excited for Don!

Update: I dont think the prayer will be televised, but apparently it will be available online at some point.

Wow. I feel really weird about this. I’m not sure how a feel about mixing spiritual leaders and politics. But I did find it really interesting that the democratic party, the supposed “Evolutionist” party, is having a prayer at the convention. But in the end it is a great honor for Don and I would do the same thing if I were in his shoes. What better way to represent your faith, instead of in front of red America.

Yeah, I think what Don essentially said in an interview about it was “If someone asks you to come pray, then you come and pray.” And even though Don has said he’ll vote for Obama, I would venture a bet that if the McCain camp had been the ones to ask him to come and pray at their Convention, that he would have done it as well. He even said in an interview that he was invited out to the White House after making critical remarks about Republicans recently and he went and had a good dialogue with them.

As for you finding it interesting that the Democrats are praying at their convention, I’ll challenge you on that one Nate. You feel weird about mixing spiritual leaders and politics, and yet you yourself have deemed one party to be a spiritual one, and one party to be so un-spiritual that you are surprised when they pray. We’ve got to break the stigmas that are attached to these parties if we’re going to look deeper at the issues. How can we ever take an honest look at the candidates in front of us if we’re going in thinking that one guy plays for the Christian team and one guy plays for the UnChristian team? And that goes for Christians, non-Christians, Republicans, and Democrats, and everyone in between. Especially myself.

    Well-said, Bry.

That said, I think every one of the conventions has had prayer. It’s just rare for anyone to know who’s doing it.

Apparently Don has said that the prayer will NOT be televised, so don’t expect to see it on the tube. I’ll probably tape the broadcast anyway, just in case.
