around the interwebnet

+ Mars Hill Church (not Rob Bell’s, Mark Driscoll’s) has posted a summary of their stance on alcohol. I think it’s great that they took the time to articulate where they stand using scripture, historical information, and common sense. I also tend to agree with their position on the whole.

+LifeChurch.tv is one of that fastest growing multi-site churches in America. And for good reason, they know what they’re doing and they’re good at it. They stay on the cutting edge of culture by doing things with excellence and by being relevant to the people they are trying to reach. Here’s another example. They’ve purchase 16 virtual acres on the popular online game Second Life. You can read more about it here. (how popular you ask? over 4 million registered users as of last month)

+ Ben Affleck involved in a DVD aimed at turning kids into Red Sox fans? No thanks.

+ Great Peter Gammons article on Spring Training if you’re an ESPN Insider.

…tournament games are beginning. My predictions will be posted here and at Burnside on Monday. (I have UCLA, Maryland, North Carolina, and Texas A&M in my Final Four with UCLA winning it all).

David vs. Goliath

March 14th, 2007 by Bryan Allain | No Comments | Filed in writing

a few weeks ago i had an idea for an article. i started typing some things out and laying the groundwork for the piece and a second idea for an article came. so i opened up a new Word file and banged out the groundwork for a modern retelling of David and Goliath’s classic battle in about 45 minutes. 6 drafts and many hours of editing later, David and Goliath is gracing the front page of the Burnside Writer’s Collective this week. It was a fun piece to write. I crammed in as many pop culture jokes and obscure sports references as i could. It’s probably not the best thing i’ve ever written, but hopefully it makes you crack a smile once or twice. check it out and leave a comment under the article (rather than here) to tell me what you think.

get those brackets filled out! Buddy, i got Ohio State going down early, which probably means they’ll make it to the Final Four.

nausea and basketball

we’ve had a visitor all week in the house. he was totally uninvited and we hope to kick him out tonight. He’s a nasty stomach bug. Got parker puking at the beginning of the week, had erica up all night on wednesday night, and had Kylie waking up sick this morning. I thought i was going to be able to avoid him, but he got me today too. I havent tossed my cookies yet, but i’m wondering if i should to feel better.

thankfully there’s lots of good college basketball on in HD today, so that’s making this a bit easier. I’m not a huge college basketball fan, but i usually get into it around this time. I’ll be filling out brackets this year, and i might be contributing to a Burnside article on the tournament, so i’m trying to soak in as much as possible.

LOST was better this past week. not fantastic, but better. I really liked tension between patches and sayid when they attacked each other. i hope they keep the momentum going in the right direction.

i played Settlers of Catan, Cities and Knights version, last night with Chad and Dawn. It was fun. So stinking complicated. It made regular Settlers look like Candyland. I lost, of course. Dawn won, of course.

Turning the clocks ahead tonight…and all the parents of toddlers around the country groan. if you dont have kids, youve never thought about it before. but imagine being on a tight schedule and suddenly everything shifts. on sunday night we’ll try to put our kids to bed at 9pm but their little bodies will be telling them that it’s only 8pm. so they’ll get to bed late. and they won’t want to get up. it’s not so bad now that our kids are older, but it kills you when they’re younger.

i can’t find anything else worth saying…chalk it up to the sickness…i’m out like like a 5-seed in the NCAA tourney

yeehaw.

ever get the feeling like there’s too much going on? sometimes i do. not necessarily an overwhelming feeling, though i can feel that on occasion as well, but more of a “wow, there’s alot going on” type of feeling.

there’s a hundred things i’d like to post about. erica’s got a nasty virus, fantasy baseball is starting up, i’m almost finished with another writing piece, our youth small group will kick off soon, softball season is fast approaching, work is going well, my parents might be one step closer to moving to north carolina, i need a water softening system for my house, march madness brackets will be fun, LOST has been a little disappointing of late, the Red Sox season starts in less than 4 weeks, my kids are so much fun, my favorite band is recording in the studio again, and the list goes on and on.

it’s a wild ride, this life, and it sucks to think that with each day that goes by there’s one less day to enjoy. But before i get all ‘Hallmark Card’, i’ll just say that i am enjoying life, despite how much is going on.

i am very blessed, more than i realize probably.

more posts to come later this week…
