Good to be back in the saddle again. Literally. My wife got me a new office chair for Christmas that is made from a real horse saddle. I’m also wearing spurs on my dress shoes today. I’m packing a dip in my lower lip and retrieving papers I print to the printer with a lasso. And I styled my hair to look like tumbleweed.

2009 is here…yeehaw!

The big difference between my first post of last year and the first post of this year is that there’s actually people reading my blog this year! That’s you guys (and gals). Thanks again for stopping by so often. This is going to be a great year for the blog.  I’m not sure how I know that, I just do. I feel it in my chaps, I guess.

Not all of you know that much about me, so I thought I’d start off the year with a few get-to-know-me statements.

My name is Bryan Allain. My middle name is Richard, after my dad. My initials are BRA, which was funny in junior high school, but not so funny in grade school. I am 32 years old. I was born in Massachusetts. I’m the oldest of 5 kids. I used to have a flat top with a rat tail that I braided and put beads on. I had my left ear pierced when I turned 16, and wore an earring until my freshman year of college. I can still wear an earring in that ear. I think “buses” should be spelled “busses”. I had braces on my top teeth for 2 years. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering. I copied a lot of homework off my roommates in college. I met my wife at a music festival among 70,000 other people. I was once pulled over on a date because my car had a hole in the exhaust pipe and I was ‘disturbing the peace’. I took the MENSA test in 2002 and was accepted in. I quit MENSA in 2003 because it costs $50/year.  I have two amazing kids, Kylie is 7 and Parker is 6. I have really big nostrils, big ankles, and a slight lisp. I saw Julianne Moore in NYC last year, and the first person I texted was Derek Webb because he is a fellow celebrity sighting geek. I occasionally like to namedrop. I live in Intercourse, PA – right in the middle of Amish country. I’ve had migraine headaches since I was in grade school, and have been told that peanuts and chocolate are the main triggers. I’ve been the president of my local church softball league for 3 years, but I think I’m stepping down this year. I’m a procrastinator. I love road trips. I hate black licorice. And I’m usually way too concerned about what other people think of me.

How about you? I would love to learn 1 or 2 random facts about some of you that I might not have known…

Random fact about me #1: Despite being a Christian and a film-loving person in general, I have not seen the following movies…The Passion of the Christ; That Movie with Kirk Cameron about Marriage; That Other Movie with Kirk Cameron about the End Times; That Movie with Michael W. Smith in a Starring Role; That One about Football and Something about Facing Giants; and It’s a Wonderful Life.

Random fact about me #2: I have seen High School Musical 3 twice.

Random fact about me #3: I once got a text from Julianne Moore telling me she had just spotted some creepy guy with big nostrils crouching behind a lightpost across from her apartment. Especially concerning to her was the fact that this guy appeared to be eating chicken out of his pocket.

I am probably the last person you would think would be the first to respond to this post, but….since I missed seeing you and your beautiful family at Bek’s for breakfast, (because my car was on fire in the Mall parking lot Dec. 26 at 8:24am, and I was shopping in that same mall for a replacement medium size sweater because Old Navy Small does not cut it anymore, at 8:34am that same day while waiting for AAA to tow me) I thought I would let you know what I didn’t get a chance to tell you, while at the breakfast I missed.
I am very amused by your blog. It is a strange thing to babysit for a child and then read their blog 25 years later.
That said. Enjoy your saddle. Ken has worn his out. It needs new padding. Hopefully yours lasts longer. oh and something random might be that yesterday the name I dropped was yours. Hmmm

  3. Christine L in MA says:

oops I guess I was the second. slow spell check…

  4. Bryan Allain says:

Christine, we were bummed that we didn’t get to see you for breakfast. Especially since Bek had said you had something to say to me about my blog. (I was envisioning you chastising me and telling me what a waste of time it was and how I should instead write stories about the virtues of Word of Life Bible Institute). I Hope everything is alright with the car…and that we can enjoy some bagels together at some point in the future. thanks for babysitting me 25 years ago, I’m sure I was a joy to watch.

  5. David Carrel says:

I separate my skittles into colors and eat four of the same color at a time.

I have a life changing daydream everyday that drives me to start towards crazy ideas that do not always get finished.

Thanks for your random BIO Bryan; very informing. Not sure I will be visiting the blog again after reading it; not really.

  6. I’m not answering, because I was reading this time last year and am apparently an unperson. :pout: ;)

  7. Matt Ralph says:

#1 I had a bit part in a independent film shot in Tulsa in 2001. I received a paycheck, but I never found out the name of the film so I have never been able to find out if was ever finished or is available to watch.

#2 I had a crush on my second grade teacher so I voluntarily made a documentary about bridges and also volunteered to give a presentation to the class about my family’s spring break trip to Colonial Williamsburg. She liked both, but it wasn’t enough to stop her from getting married before the school year was out. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t win me too many second grade fans.

#3 I still know – word for word – the song my character (Cyrus B. Snake) sang in my fifth grade production of “Pinnochio, Don’t Smoke That Cigarette.”

#4 I’m not good at following directions.

  8. Bryan Allain says:

@david – i’ve never got the skittles separation thing (or M&Ms for that matter…though I never eat them thanks to the chocolate-migraine thing). what’s better, btw, skittles or starburst?

@geof – you not only were reading last year, youve been reading every year since i started blogging. in fact, there’s probably been times the only reason i’ve kept blogging was because of you, so thanks.

@matt – i never had the grade school teacher crush, but i have a bunch of friends who did.

  9. Roger says:

#1 I always blank when asked to say something about myself.

    #2 See #1

  10. That’s right. You better thank me in your book acknowledgements, dude.

  11. Sarah says:

My name is Sarah. When I was little, it was Sarah Ruth. Then I turned 5 and put the kibbosh on that. You don’t know me at all, but I love your blog.:)

About 4 years ago, I saw one of my favorite UNC basketball players at Outback. When he left, he forgot his leftover chicken wings. They’re still in my freezer.

My last car was named Small Freddie, and the current one is Ramses.

My biggest pet peeve is children calling adults by their title and first name (i.e., “Miss Sarah” and “Mr. Bryan”)

    I was born on 01-23 at 4:56 in ‘78. That’s 012345678.

  • What's too complicated, LOST's mythology or Carlton's hair? // RT I am thinking about Bonini's paradox.
  • RT I like the phrase "It's not for everyone," because it literally applies to every single thing in the entire world.
  • I'm a pitch-man for Clorox, they just don't know it yet. the 1st of many bad ads i have in the can. http://bit.ly/dvlZuK
  • i can't wait to watch Karate Kid with Parker for the first time. Always gets a little dusty in the room when Daniel wins.
  • instead of an afternoon cup of coffee, i listen to the "you're the best around" song from Karate Kid. Same effect.
