Where Do You Serve?

Last week we had our monthly “F1rst Wednesday” Service at church. I was hanging around the back of the church as the service was getting underway and our youth pastor Jake asked me if I wanted to run the lyrics/backgrounds during the music. We were doing a baptism later in the evening and Jake needed to go get ready for it.

I was happy to do it. Before I joined the worship team 5 years ago I was on the sound team, so I thought it would be cool to do it again for old time’s sake. Plus I like the idea of filling in and serving in different areas of our church when I get the chance.

It got me wondering about y’all. Those of you who attend a church on a regular basis, is there an area (or areas) that you serve in? It would be cool to see if there was someone representing all the different areas of church ministry here.

And those of you who don’t go to church, are there organizations or causes that you serve with? Would love to hear about those…

I’ll go first. I serve on the worship team (playing my glorious Martin D-35), the Missions team, and the “occasionally give the offering intro” team. I’m also a deacon, which means I go to board meetings and get to help make decisions about the future of our church, which I love.

(for the record: snapping this pic with my iPhone did not cause me to miss a transition…though I did miss a few later when I was fooling around with some of the backgrounds)

Is that Pro-Presenter being used on that mac?

  2. Bryan Allain says:

I think so? I should probably know…I think Pro-Presenter sounds right though.

Jake? Chad? can you confirm this?

  3. Isaac says:

Yea, i think it is…i can recognize the Logo on the upper right corner…the colors are different so it took me awhile to recognize. But the lay out is pretty spot on.

    and where don’t i serve?
-We meet at a school so I am in charge of organizing people to help me set-up the worship team area and all the sound equipment.
-I am part of the worship team…i play perc.
-I help with visuals from time to time…hence recognizing pro-presenter.
-I put up the sign at the entrance to the school every weekend.
-Amy and I lead and host a small group.
-I am on the financial team
-We are core group members from when the church was planted in May 2005

  4. Greg says:

I serve as Director of Student Ministry Development. I lead student missions trips. And they occasionally let me lead some worship in student ministries (on my glorious Breedlove C25/SR)

  5. Bryan Allain says:

@Isaac – I might need to buy you a copy of Mad Church Disease when it comes out…avoid the burnout! no, that’s cool that you are so involved.

@Greg – sounds like you have an exciting role! and Breedloves…mmmm…always thought they looked/sounded amazing.

  6. Isaac says:

Thanks Bryan…and I do keep a good balance. But it does sound like a heck of a lot when i wrote it down.

  7. Jason Boyett says:

Outside of my official duties as a staff member, I play drums for the worship team, lead a small group, and speak (I hesitate to call it “preaching”) on occasion when our regular pastor is out.

  8. I like this post. Some of my fondest memories are of being on the worship team with you, and the in-between song banter. Serving in church is awesome, and even after playing The Mint shows I still really look forward and love to play guitar for the worship.

  9. Nate Blevins says:

That’s one thing I miss about being in “normal” church. Serving weekly. Not that my in my church I can’t serve, but it’s serving in a non-traditional way.

  10. Peta Slaney says:

I print a small magazine for our “senior Saints” every month being a senior myself.
I also organize a luncheon every three months for same senior Saints who can then bring their friends who are not Christians and in so doing, coming to our luncheons, these dear seniors suddenly realize that “Christians” are also normal people, which they apparently did not think they were!
We have a lot of laughs…the next one is soon look forward to them immensely!
    God Bless!
(Oh, sometimes when I see something here I plaguarize sp?it for my little magazine, I hope you don’t mind? {:o)) ) I like to keep a Christian message for the centre page as quite a few un believers receive the mag too. I actually post 6.
    My thing for the Lord

  11. At previous churches, I have been a youth counselor and sung in the choir. I’ve also directed children’s choirs from time to time and worked in contemporary worship services [although my heart is with traditional, high-church worship]. That said, I’m between churches now. :/

  12. Ron Davis says:

I work on the tech team (“production ministry”). Most of the time i do propresenter (with a setup very similar to your photo). I also run lights or a video camera as needed, but most of the time I’m sitting behind the mac putting words up on the screen.

  13. Erik says:

I serve as a youth leader/volunteer associate pastor with the youth pastor. Along with those duties, I also serve on the church Pastors S.W.A.T. Team (being a graphic designer, I put all of the artwork with the church bulletin, create all the wall art, and put together any booklets… basically anything need to help the Pastor deliver his sermons each week). And yet I also serve on the sound/tech team during service. I think that is about it for me… yeah that’s it. My wife puts all the music together for the worship team and sings her brains out as well as a pre-school teacher at the church through the week and puts all of the Thursday morning chapel lessons together for the kids. You could say we are a little overloaded with church stuff but the Lord always seems to find ways to get us the time, patents and energy to get through it. God is good… All the time, and All the time… God is good.

  14. Chris Hubbs says:

Let’s see… at my previous churches I have:

    - led worship team
    - ran/coordinated sound team
    - been recording secretary
    - served as a deacon
    - served as an elder
    - taught Sunday School
    - led Bible studies
    - prepared a Wednesday night meal 1x/month (under the direction of my wife :-)

    - burned out.

Long story short, I couldn’t find a way to slow down to a more reasonable pace that my pastor could live with. Hence, we, like Geof, are in between churches. I think we may have decided on a new church now, though.

  15. Bryan Allain says:

@jonathan – i do miss those times of banter between songs. hopefully we weren’t “quenching the spirit” with our occasional irreverence.

    thanks everyone for sharing…very interesting.

  16. TiBi says:

The hubby and I both do LOTS with Children’s Ministry at our church. Did I mention LOTS??? If these boogers of ours will ever grow up we’re gonna make a break for kitchen clean-up or lawn maintenance or gum peelers of bottom of pews. Oh well, its our season.
Much more interesting is that my hubby, who is in law enforcement, is part of the emergency response team at our church. You know, in case something whacko happens one Sunday or something. There’s a small group of them armed and ready.
